AGISS WRITERS AND DEBATERS CLUB

Background

The Writers and Debaters Club is a student organization that aims to foster critical thinking, effective communication, and creative writing skills among its members. The club provides a platform for students to engage in debates, discussions, and writing activities, helping them develop their analytical and expressive abilities.

 

Accra Girls Senior High School Writers and Debaters Club (WDC) is one of the vibrant clubs in the School, under the department of English. The AGISSWDC was formed to create space where students can explore their creativity, share ideas, and build confidence in their writing and public speaking skills. The club’s activities are designed to encourage members to think critically, research thoroughly, and articulate their thoughts clearly. Membership is usually open to all students, and the club is led by a team of elected executives who oversee the planning and execution of events. The Writers and Debaters Club is a great way for students to develop their skills, build confidence, and connect with like-minded individuals who share a passion for writing and debating. The club thrives on modern rhetoric under the guidance of the patrons of the club

 

Objectives:

AGISS WDC purpose is to teach and train students in the Fundamentals of debate, public speaking and writing.

  • To provide a platform for students to share their writing and debating skills
  • To develop critical thinking, research, and analytical skills
  • To foster effective communication and public speaking skills
  • To encourage creative writing and self-expression
  • To promote teamwork and collaboration among members

 

Activities:

The club’s activities include:

  • Debates on various topics, from politics to pop culture during club meetings
  • Writing workshops and critique sessions
  • Poetry and short story writings and readings
  • Guest lectures and workshops by established writers and debaters

Competitions:

  • Inter Houses Debate Competitions
  • Inter Programme Speech and Debate Competitions
  • Inter-School Debate Competitions
  • Participation in regional and national writing and debating competitions
  • Invitational Friendly . The school is sometimes invited by NGO’S to partake in some debate activities
  • Friendly Match: This is where the school is invited by sister schools or vice versa to compete with them.

AGISS WDC is a great place for the students where they explore the art of organized arguing. The students enjoy researching, writing and discussing current issues and good presentation skills. The club trains students to learn to create logical, factual, ethical arguments to persuade others. The goal of the club is to compete in competitions among senior high school students.

ACHIEVEMENTS

AGISS WDC has produced outspoken personalities whose oratory skills were nurtured at the school. The well-seasoned debating team with only a few days’ notice can perform well in any debate competition. The club can boast of so many achievements since the inception of the club.

  • The AGISS WDC has been crowned Greater Accra regional champions and represented the region severally in debate competitions.

 

  • In 2021, Accra Girls’ S.H.S won the 64th independence celebration debate conquest for the Greater Accra region and subsequently representing the region at the national level.
  • The Young Debaters 2022 also featured the club in the international Public Speaking Competition where a Fathia Dramani was adjudged the 2nd Runner Up
  • On the 14th of March 2022, the AGISS debating club won the debate contest for the 11th Ghana Cultural Day Symposium organized by the Ghana Cultural and Creative Arts Industry.

 

  • Gone through all the stages of the maiden National Girls speech and Debate Championship in 2023 as the 1st Runner up

 

  • The AGISS WDC was declare Champions in the 2023 debate competition organized by Afram publications.
  • The club participated and won the 2024, 67th Independence Day debate Greater Accra and represented the region in the inter regionals in Kumasi.
  • The club competed and were the first runners up in the 2023 debate organized by cultural Forum.
  • The club has participated and emerged as the OVERALL CHAMPIONS of the 2024 ECOWAS Inter-School Debate Competition in commemoration of the 69TH ECOWAS Day Celebration organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration.

 

The club has produced and won prices such as Most Knowledgeable debaters, most eloquent, best debaters, etc. The school as well as the individual debaters won numerous awards both in cash and kind. Some of these awards include medals, desk top computers, lab tops computers, tablets, phones, smart watches and the likes.
